If you read my last pregnancy update, I included a little surprise at the end – I got a second job! I shared a really short version of the story there, but I wanted to share a little bit more about how this all came to be, what my new day-to-day will look like, and all the in between stuff. Mostly for my own benefit (this blog has turned into me documenting the everyday more and more), but also for those of you who are interested. Here’s the scoop:
A couple of years ago, a girl I knew from the Internet (hi, Mandi!) started her own boutique virtual assistant company and it’s now She Can Coterie. What started out as just Mandi has now turned into nine employees (including me!). I had seen what she was doing from a distance through social media and loved the heartbeat behind her company and always kind of thought that working with her was something that would be so much fun, but it had never worked out with what was currently going on in my life at the time.
At the beginning of July, she came to my mind again and I decided to DM her on Twitter (I love technology!) to see if there were any positions open, specifically in editorial (if you don’t know… I have my BA in English with an emphasis in editing + publishing). Surprise! Not only would there be a position opening up, but it would be the manager of the new editorial offerings she had in the works. How fun!
I filled out the application right away and then on July 21 (the day after my birthday), Mandi emailed me with some more details about the position and invited me to chat with her more in-depth if I was still interested. Yes, of course! We chatted. I was still interested. She was still interested. So we said, “Let’s do it!” and I jumped right in and accepted the Editorial Manager position at the end of July.
What will I actually be doing? Right now, Mandi and I are working together to develop new editorial offerings, which means a lot of brainstorming, copy-writing, proofreading, and other miscellaneous stuff while things are new. I’ll also be writing posts for the She Can Coterie blog and then working with the current editorial specialist once the new offering is launched to make sure everything is running smoothly.
What does that mean for my current job? I’m not quitting my day job. I’ll be working with She Can after office hours and on the weekends for now. After my maternity leave, though, Tyler and I had already discussed reducing my in-office hours so that I could be home more with our new little one. The plan is to work outside of our home less so I can spend more time being a mommy. I have never wanted to be a full-time stay-at-home mom, so this will be a good compromise, I think!
This past week, I’ve actually started diving into the nitty gritty of the job and I’m loving it. Yesterday between my office job and my at-home job, I worked a 12-hour day, but it definitely didn’t feel like it because I love this new job so much! It’s what I went to school for and it’s what fires me up, so I have great feelings about it all.
Can’t wait to see where all of this goes and to take you guys on the journey with me. Thanks for listening to me ramble! If you have any questions, let me know in the comments below.
